Philanthropy
Surfing Sisters of Delta Zeta supports fundraising efforts chiefly support the Delta Zeta Foundation and the official philanthropies of Delta Zeta Sorority, but the chapter also branches out to support a variety of non-profit organizations that may vary from year to year.
Delta Zeta Foundation
The Foundation supports leadership development and educational programs enabling members to become leaders on their campuses and communities.
The Painted Turtle
The Painted Turtle is an innovative medical specialty camp and family care center for children who have chronic and life-threatening illnesses.
The Starkey Hearing Foundation
The Foundation's Hear Now program assists deaf and hard-of-hearing persons with limited financial resources who permanently reside within the United States.
Sound Beginnings
Delta Zeta partners with the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management (NCHAM) on this program. Collegians and alumnae provide videos and informational brochures, which emphasize the importance of follow-up testing for failed infant hearing screening, to local organizations, clinics, and doctors who work with mothers and infants.
Through our fundraising efforts since 2003, Surfing Sisters Alumnae Chapter has been privileged to support these other non-profit organizations:
Tsunami Disaster Relief $500.00
Hurricane Katrina Relief $500.00
Dogs for the Deaf $275.00
Project Bear Mountain – donated stuffed animals to children in emergency situations
Heifer Project International $500.00
more to come… waiting on Jill and Katie Franklin
Surfing Sisters also implements programming to enhance the membership of the Chapter. The 2007 – 2008 campaign is “The Very Pink of Perfection.” This campaign challenges members to achieve assigned community and personal well-being tasks towards a common inspired goal of being “the very pink of perfection.” You can track your progress in this campaign using this sheet.
Past campaigns:
Yoplait Lids
In support of the search to find a cure for breast cancer, Surfing Sisters members collected and turned in pink Yoplait yogurt lids. Members were also encouraged to participate in their local Race for the Cure and Avon Walk for the Cure.
National Wear Red Day for Women
In support of National Wear Red Day for Women, messages were sent out to educate sisters about heart health.
Better Speech and Hearing Month
In honor of Better Speech and Hearing month, messages were posted to the membership focusing on Delta Zeta charities, childhood hearing loss, and technology to aid the hard of hearing.
FUND DEVELOPMENT
Surfing Sisters strives to raise money for philanthropic projects, both national and ‘local.’ The chapter also raises money to send a voting delegate to Delta Zeta’s National Convention, and for various chapter events (product start up costs, sisterhood activities, website maintenance, and any unplanned expenses). The Chapter predictably hosts one annual and one seasonal fund raising campaigns, and several continuous effortless online fundraisers.
The annual Surfing Sisters Founders Day Virtual Luncheon. Sisters are invited to attend a ‘virtual luncheon’ where the Chapter President presents a modified Founders Day ceremony honoring the sorority’s six founders. Attendees donate a dollar per year since their own initiation to attend and all monies collected are sent to the Delta Zeta Foundation under the name of the Chapter. Historically, the Chapter has risen between $500.00 and$1500.00 for the Foundation.
Seasonal fund raising campaigns are usually unique products designed by a chapter member and purchased in bulk and sold to members. They are designed with the Delta Zeta market in mind and have been sold at Region Weekends as well.
Past seasonal products that have been sold:
Fleece Scarves
Holiday Greeting Cards
Turtle Soup Cook Book 1 & 2
Air Fresheners
Specialty Tee-Shirts
Themed Cookie Cutters
Being that Surfing Sisters Alumnae Chapter is based on the Internet, hosting online fund raisers is easy and appeals to our techno savvy members. These fundraisers ebb and flow with members’ interests and the Chapter is always looking for other innovative virtual fundraising ideas.
